MELT is a green tech spin-off from Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. Its large-scale, freely scalable latent storage panels for wall and roof structures help to stabilize the room temperature in buildings. Large amounts of heat can be stored at a comfortable temperature, preventing both severe overheating and cooling. The solution is an ideal addition to lightweight and particularly resource-saving building structures made of wood and in modular and container construction, as these are normally subject to greater temperature fluctuations due to their lack of mass.

The storage panels installed in the building envelope serve as natural overheating protection in summer and as intermediate heat storage in winter. As the availability of renewable energy fluctuates naturally, the MELT Plates provide greater flexibility in terms of heating times, which favors the use of renewables and reduces peak loads.

MELT-Ing products such as the MELT Plate can store the heat of approx. 25 cm of concrete wall in thin layers of 1.2 cm. This is possible because a phase change material is integrated into the inconspicuous thin plates. Similar to an ice cube - but at a different temperature - the material can change between a solid and (thickened) liquid state and absorb or release a lot of energy in the process.

In case studies, for example, the day/night fluctuation of a prefabricated house builder's tiny house was reduced by 62%. Completely passive without additional energy consumption.

The MELT Plates have a CO2 footprint around 10 times smaller than the concrete equivalent and are therefore perfect for resource-saving and prefabricated construction methods.

Thermal building simulations to analyze the potential of MELT products

We are able to offer thermal simulations of buildings as part of pilot studies and forecasts. Future-proof scenarios can also be investigated. Potentials of current floor plans and wall constructions are analyzed and evaluated. Heat protection measures can be recommended in conjunction with the MELT Plate. In many cases, the MELT Plate allows freer planning of other thermal insulation measures or design freedom in terms of window size.

Retrofitting MELT Plates as part of modernization projects

We develop customized solutions for the integration of MELT Plates in renovation and drywall construction systems. Due to the low installation height, the MELT Plate can be integrated in many cases without requiring additional space.

As a scalable product with a high impact, the MELT Plate will be developed especially for our customers in the field of serial production. Here, we offer specific solutions that can be optimally integrated into the internal processes of buildings in skeleton construction. MELT Plate

MELT Plates in various sizes

The MELT Plate is the first product from MELT-Ing GmbH. A square meter sized spatially scalable plate with phase change material. The melting temperatures 21°C, 25°C, 29°C are currently available, which cover the areas of room temperature buffering and heat protection. Further materials for higher temperature levels are in the pipeline.

We are currently in the approval process for the construction industry and are focusing primarily on pilot customers and future partners for product integration in prefabricated walls, prefabricated roofs and modular construction. Furthermore, we have experience in the field of resilient infrastructure/logistics through projects in the defense sector.

Projects

Research assignment - Overheating of storage containers

A 10-foot container equipped with a sandwich panel made of MELT Plates and a top layer

As part of a research project, a 10-foot storage container was fitted with MELT Plates on the outside. The aim was to investigate the reduction of "hot days" above 30°C, which are regularly reached in these lightweight steel containers even in spring. The modification had to be retrofittable and change the outer geometry of the containers only minimally. The thin MELT Plates with their high thermal buffer effect offer an optimum solution here, and

the MELT Plate was tested against various other solutions that change the emission properties of the container in particular, and against unmodified steel containers in two standard paint finishes.

The container equipped with MELT Plates showed a reduction in heat days from 45 to 7 days compared to the reference. In addition, the average temperature fluctuations over the day were reduced from 11K! to 5K

. The results were published in a paper, which we are happy to make available.
