Air pollution control

Clean air – for our health and the environment

Reduce pollutants, improve quality of life, protect the climate

Breathing clean air is a fundamental human need. But air pollution control goes far beyond this: it is a central component in overcoming the ecological challenges of our time. The lead market focusses on industrial air pollution control in production and manufacturing processes as well as on the reduction of traffic-related emissions. An important aspect here is also the binding of climate-damaging emissions.

Solutions in the field of air pollution control essentially comprise classic additive environmental protection technologies that focus on filtration and downstream cleaning. With innovative and competitive solutions, we are driving forward climate protection and at the same time strengthening Baden-Württemberg as a business location.

Air pollution control market segments

The lead market for air pollution control is divided into three market segments. There are numerous service providers offering innovative solutions in each of these segments. In the GreenTech BW Atlas you will find providers of green solutions from Baden-Württemberg.

Filter technology and exhaust air purification systems

The filter technology and exhaust air purification systems market segment are the most important in the lead market. At 4.6% p.a. (labour force), it is also the fastest-growing segment.

This market segment includes dust filters, for example, which filter fine dust and other harmful particles from the air. Exhaust filters in vehicles and electrostatic precipitators, which are used in industrial processes to remove fine particles such as soot and ash from exhaust gases, are also important components. The segment also includes exhaust air purification systems such as thermal post-combustion systems, which efficiently remove organic pollutants, or biofilter systems, in which the exhaust air is channelled through biologically active substrate to break down pollutants.

Catalysts

In the field of air pollution control, catalysts refer to basic materials and chemicals that convert pollutants into harmless compounds. They are used, for example, in the catalytic converter, which is a key component in vehicles with combustion engines. It is used for exhaust gas aftertreatment and converts harmful combustion gases into less harmful substances. The converter uses catalysts (often platinum, palladium and rhodium) to accelerate the chemical reactions that convert carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) into non-toxic substances such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrogen (N₂).

Measurement, control and regulation technology for exhaust air

Measurement, control and regulation technology plays a central role in air pollution control and is crucial for ensuring high air quality. Baden-Württemberg occupies an outstanding position in this field throughout Germany. This market segment includes emission measuring devices such as particle counters and gas analysers, which precisely record the concentration of pollutants in the exhaust air. Monitoring systems and data management systems are also essential components that contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of air purification measures.
