Green City Freiburg - Environmental and solar industry in the Freiburg region
The cluster initiative, initiated in 2009, serves to network regional companies and institutions in the fields of renewable energies, energy efficiency, sustainable planning and construction, mobility concepts and environmental technology. In addition to supporting the transfer of knowledge and technology and the development of cooperation projects, the declared goal is to increase international awareness of the competencies of the cluster members in the green growth model "Green City" Freiburg. The cluster initiative is one of the prize winners of the first competition to strengthen regional clusters in Baden-Württemberg.

A study initiated by the Green City cluster and presented to the public in September 2012 proves that a region supplied with 100 percent renewable energy is feasible by 2050. The "Freiburg Region" - a cooperation of the city district of Freiburg and the two districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen with their 75 cities and municipalities that has existed since 1994 - took this result as a concrete opportunity and adopted a position paper on climate policy at its general meeting on June 19, 2013 with the goal of positioning itself as a "100 percent renewable energy region" by 2050 and developing a joint catalog of measures for the entire region.
