As a developer and supplier of innovative and contemporary planting systems and technologies, we offer HELIX Pflanzensysteme GmbH rapid greening of structures and landscapes even in unusual locations. With our integrated concepts for irrigation and nutrient supply, we break new ground in the greening of even difficult terrain. With our horticultural and plant cultivation expertise, we stand for sustainable, modern and aesthetically pleasing green solutions, project-related and individual.
Ecology is a special concern for us in the development of our concepts. Together with partners at colleges, universities and institutes, we research for a healthier and more livable environment. HELIX plant systems have been proven to reduce the burden on the environment. They bind air pollutants, improve air quality, reduce noise, save energy, protect against wind or air-condition buildings.

Rainwater utilization through plant evaporation
Rainwater, which can be collected from the roofs of adjacent buildings, is used to irrigate Helix® green noise barriers and plant systems. The rainwater is collected in accumulation channels and fed to the irrigation system. The goal is to use only rainwater to supply the planting systems.
100 m² of vegetated area evaporates about 100 m³ of water per year (key figures for Hedera helix 'Woerneri')

Separation and scrubbing of fine dust on ivy
In the European Union, a limit value of 40 micrograms of fine dust (<10μm = PM10) per cubic meter of air has been in effect since January 1, 2005. If 50 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter of air are exceeded on more than 35 days a year - based on the daily mean value - the affected municipality must take steps to reduce particulate matter pollution. To this end, action plans must be drawn up that specify concrete measures. Most instruments attack the sources of immissions - the fewer pollutants emitted, the lower the overall pollution - such as driving bans at certain times or for certain categories of vehicles.
Other methods are designed to remove particulate matter after the fact. This includes, for example, the targeted use of plants as fine dust filters. Information on the effect of green spaces and plants on air quality and the quality of life in our cities is available from various studies
There is high interest in planting ivy (Hedera helix) on bare street facades to trap particulate matter. Ivy provides three to eight square meters of leaf area per square meter of facade and can filter up to six grams of particulate matter (Dunnett and Kingsbury, 2004). In addition, this plant is also evergreen, so it functions as a year-round filter. This characteristic is especially important for removing particulate matter. Compared to bare stone surfaces, however, facade greening not only offers a tremendous increase in filter surface area, but it also significantly improves the appearance of a city.
The separation of fine particles by ivy (Hedera helix 'Wörner') and the washing off of particles under active sprinkling was also investigated by the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Department of Environmental Protection: From the measurement results it was deduced that Hedera helix 'Wörner' contributes to particulate matter removal on the one hand, and is characterized by precipitation-induced leaf cleaning on the other hand.

CO2-Sequestration and oxygen production
Plants have the ability to absorb the CO2 contained in the atmosphere and convert it into oxygen and biomass through their photosynthesis metabolism.
100 m² of wall greening with Hedera helix 'Wörner' binds about 230 kg of carbon dioxide per year and produces about 170 kg of oxygen per year, these figures are reported in a research report from the Dresden University of Applied Sciences 2009.

Facade greening parking garage Cologne
In the fall of 2020, the parking garage facade in the newly developing I/D Cologne urban district was greened. With approx. 2,000 m², the facade greening in Cologne-Mülheim is one of the largest vertically greened areas in Germany.

Where does the water for urban greenery come from?
The INTERESS-I research project is developing new strategies for green and blue infrastructure in the city. The aim is to use graywater to irrigate urban green spaces sustainably without using precious drinking water.
