B.E.N.E Möglingen
The energy project in Möglingen is a prime example of successful, environmentally friendly heat generation. To supply hundreds of households with electricity and heat, the energy provider Bürger Energie Neckar Enz relies, among other things, on a Jenbacher J320 engine and a thermal storage system with a storage capacity of 750 cubic meters. The Jenbacher J320 has an output of 999 kW of electricity and up to 1,450 kW of heat.

Bad Säckingen Public Utilities
With its major modernization of its combined heat and power (CHP) plants, Stadtwerke Bad Säckingen is demonstrating how even a small municipality can implement the heat transition consistently at the regional level.
Over time, the combined heat and power (CHP) plant—which has been in operation since 1989—has been expanded and now includes two new-generation Jenbacher J420 E units, two J416 units, one J312, and a thermal storage tank with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters. Thanks to its high flexibility, the plant can be operated in a power-driven mode—that is, based on current electricity demand. Powered exclusively by biomethane, the plant saves 3,600 metric tons of CO2 per year compared to conventional oil-fired heat generation—a major step toward the energy transition.

Ulm District Heating, LLC (FUG)
With the replacement of its last coal-fired boiler, FUG (Fernwärme Ulm GmbH) will complete its phase-out of coal in 2022, demonstrating that a sustainable, reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly district heating supply works in practice.
Construction of the plant for FUG began in 2019. The two Jenbacher J920 FleXtra engines were installed in May 2021 and commissioned in 2022. The energy generated is fed into three different district heating networks and the power grid of Stadtwerke Ulm as part of a combined heat and power (CHP) system. The overall efficiency of over 90% and the ability to come online within a few minutes are the plant’s greatest advantages over the former coal-fired power plant. Gas—and later hydrogen—emit significantly less CO2 (over 80%). Thus, the Ulm project is a prime example of a successful energy transition.
