Development, planning and production of alkaline pressure electrolysis systems
The EBZ Group's alkaline pressure electrolysis plants offer the ideal conditions for producing green hydrogen on an industrial scale cost-effectively and with a high degree of efficiency.
The basis for this is our extensive experience in toolmaking and in the design, construction and commissioning of plants for series production in the automotive industry. Both areas are subject to the highest quality standards, which enables us to manufacture standardized, turnkey electrolysis systems with consistently high quality in series production.
We also have expertise in the fields of chemistry, metallurgy and plastics technology in order to optimally meet the specific requirements of alkaline pressure electrolysis.
The scientific basis for our electrolysis stack was developed over more than ten years at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). We have been systematically continuing this development at EBZ since 2022 and remain in close contact with the researchers at ZSW.
Products
0.5 MW electrolysis stack
The EBZ Group develops and produces alkaline pressure electrolysis stacks at its site in Ravensburg, Germany, and also sells them without the associated complete system.
Each stack has a rated electrical output of up to 0.5 MW and is designed for operation under pressure. The EBZ electrolysis stack can be seamlessly integrated into individual system concepts and therefore offers maximum flexibility for a wide range of applications.
Important key figures of our electrolysis stack at a glance
- H2 output pressure: 30 bar
- Maximum power consumption: 0.5 MW DC per stack
- H2 production: 100 Nm3/h or 9 kg/h per stack
- Power consumption: ~ 50 kWh/kg
- Dimensions: 1170 mm x 3339 mm x 1170 mm
The electrolysis stack is characterized above all by the following properties:
- High energy efficiency: this is ensured by highly functional, catalytically active coatings, among other things.
- High hydrogen output: With a nominal output of 0.5 MW, the hydrogen output is up to 100 Nm3/h.
- Robustness: Durable stacks, a prerequisite in the hydrogen industry.
- Pressurized electrolysis: Hydrogen production at 30 bar(g) pressure increases efficiency and reduces the additional cost of downstream compressors for hydrogen compression and storage.
- Modularity: EBZ's compact electrolysis stacks can be designed for large-scale projects thanks to their modular structure.
- Safety: Certification to the highest safety standards and approval by TÜV Süd.
1 MW electrolysis plant
In addition to the general planning of electrolysis projects and the innovative electrolysis stacks, the EBZ Group also offers complete modular systems. Our containerized electrolysis plant consists of two standardized 20-foot containers: One of the containers contains two powerful 0.5 MW electrolysis stacks in the innovative EBZ design, while the second container contains the complete control technology, the power electronics and the water treatment system. Such a container system delivers an electrical output of 1 MW.
Thanks to the modular design, the system can be scaled flexibly: For a 5 MW project, for example, five 1 MW modules are combined. This allows us to implement a wide range of project sizes as required - efficiently, space-saving and suitable for industrial use.
Important key figures of our electrolysis plant at a glance
- H2 output pressure: 30 bar
- Installed electrical power: 1200 kVA (incl. BoP)
- H2production : 200 Nm3/h or 18 kg/h
- Power consumption: ~ 56 kWh/kg (at plant level)
- Dimensions: 2x 20-ft container or 1x 40-ft container
The electrolysis plant is characterized by the following features:
- High hydrogen output: With a nominal output of 1 MW, the hydrogen output is up to 200 Nm3/h per system.
- Hydrogen purity: Separate H2 and O2 caustic circuits lead to improved hydrogen purity.
- Pressure electrolysis: Hydrogen production at 30 bar(g) increases efficiency and reduces downstream compression costs.
- High dynamics: Independent operation of the electrolysis stacks enables partial load capability between 8-100% of the load.
- Heat recovery: The heat generated during H2production can be dissipated and utilized.
- Ideal for grid-friendly operation: The electrolysis stack reaches 100% load from standby mode within seconds.
- Conformity with EU regulations: The conditions of the European Hydrogen Bank are fully met.
General planning of electrolysis plants
As an experienced plant constructor, EBZ can also take on the role of general planner for electrolysis projects on request. We support our customers in the early project phases with the technical and conceptual design of their hydrogen plant. The focus here is on technical feasibility and the evaluation of different plant and operating concepts.
Together with our customers, we analyze different design variants, operating strategies and system configurations. Key influencing factors such as system size, operating mode, load profiles and energy-related framework conditions are taken into account and compared.
Through the close integration of planning expertise and our own technology, we ensure that the concepts developed are not only theoretically coherent, but also practically feasible and industrially tested. In this way, we support our customers in the sound preparation of their projects.
Projects
1 MW test and showcase system at the Ravensburg site
With the 1 MW test and showcase plant, EBZ operates an electrolysis plant for the practical testing and demonstration of its own technology. The plant serves as a reference for the industrial use of alkaline pressure electrolysis and enables operation under realistic boundary conditions.
The aim of the plant is to test, optimize and transparently demonstrate the interaction of electrolysis stacks, peripherals, control technology and energy supply in the overall system. In addition to continuous operation, different operating states, load profiles and control strategies are investigated. The knowledge gained flows directly into the further development of stacks and system concepts.
The system also acts as a showcase for interested parties. It enables a clear demonstration of the technology, supports feasibility assessments and serves as a reference for the design of future electrolysis projects on an industrial scale. Interested parties are cordially invited to contact us. We would be happy to arrange a tour of the plant and a technical exchange on specific applications and project ideas.
