GEA Wiegland installed the first plants in Europe to be heated with mechanical steam in 1970. During the mechanical vapour recompression, the vapour is recompressed at a higher pressure using a mechanically-driven compressor. The compressor therefore also works as a heat pump and provides the vapour with energy. .

GEA Wiegand for over 40 years provides facilities for treating and cleaning of pollutants and / or particle-laden exhaust air streams. A core competence of GEA Wiegand is the application of different wet scrubbers for purification of exhaust gases may be combined depending on the application and requirements. These scrubbers are ideal for absorbing pollutants, for separating dusts, droplets and aerosols, for saturating and cooling of gases.

In order to increase the capacity of the production line of a customer in Belarus, GEA Wiegand designed an exhaust gas purification plant with a better purification performance and optimal efficiency. A combination of filter and dry-scrubber technology is used to reduce dust loads and ammonia, which is harmful to health. The exhaust gas is purified to such an extent, that it goes beyond even German standards.

In the refinery business, saving energy is very important as the profit margin on products made from crude oil is very low. Despite high investment costs, Wiegand was able to design a 2-stage steam jet vacuum pump with liquid ring pumps. The savings made on atomising steam make it advantageous for financial reasons.

GEA Wiegand has successfully opened the most energy efficient destillation plant for high qulaity alcohol in the world. The columns are operated under different pressures, from vacuum to excess pressure. This creates a transfer of energy between the columns and represents a saving for the plant, in comparison to other plants, of around 50 % of primary energy at the same level of production quality.
