Open-source, efficient heating and cooling solutions from the inventor of the ice storage system
caldoa is the pioneer of ice storage technology and has been setting the standard in sustainable heating and cooling for over a decade. Our systems are open-source, modular, and always tailored to the most economically and technically sound energy mix—provided a heat pump is part of the solution.
Our systems function as integrated energy hubs: They utilize the earth’s natural geothermal energy (via underground storage tanks), incorporate waste heat—for example, from server rooms or data centers—and harness additional energy through the crystallization effect in the ice storage tank. This results in a highly efficient, renewable integrated system—also suitable for use in water protection areas.
Our services at a glance:
- Development, planning, and implementation of efficient integrated systems: ice storage, geothermal energy, heat pumps, PVT, technical control centers
- Proprietary control and regulation technology for maximum system efficiency
- Utilization of waste heat sources and geothermal energy from the ground
- Decarbonization of buildings, sites, and heating networks
- Contracting models available in collaboration with energy providers
Wherever ice storage makes ecological and economic sense, we implement it—as a key technology for a sustainable energy future.
Projects
Efficient Energy Technology for the DACHSER Campus in Kempten
For the new DACHSER Network Campus in Kempten, Caldoa installed an ice storage system with a volume of 1,018 m³ and a storage capacity of approximately 78,220 kWh. The system delivers up to 820 kW of heating capacity and 630 kW of cooling capacity. As the general contractor, we implemented the entire energy center, including the control system, heat pump, and storage technology—ensuring a climate-friendly, sustainable energy supply for the site.
Sustainable Energy Solution for Production and Administration at Schubert GmbH
caldoa built the world’s largest ice storage system to date for Schubert GmbH, with a volume of 2,450 m³ and a storage capacity of approximately 170,678 kWh. The system delivers up to 850 kW of heating capacity and 341 kW of cooling capacity. In addition, waste heat from the company’s own server room is integrated into the system—a significant contribution to energy efficiency. The result is a sustainable, low-carbon solution for production and administration.
Sustainable Neighborhood Services in the Blütenviertel District of Caputh, Near Potsdam
In the Blütenviertel neighborhood of Caputh near Potsdam, Caldoa is ensuring a sustainable, open-source energy supply. The ice storage system, with a volume of 552 m³ and a storage capacity of approximately 42,000 kWh, efficiently supplies the new residential district with up to 260 kW of heating capacity and 232 kW of cooling capacity. As the general contractor, we planned and implemented the entire system—including the heat pump, control systems, and technical control center. The result: a modern, low-carbon energy supply for climate-friendly living.
Low-carbon energy for BORX Hamburg—implemented through a contracting model
For the modern BORX office building in Hamburg, Caldoa developed a future-proof energy solution based on an ice storage system with a volume of 672 m³ and a storage capacity of approximately 51,670 kWh. The system delivers up to 330 kW of cooling capacity and 280 kW of heating capacity. Notably, the project is being implemented under a contracting model in collaboration with an energy provider—ensuring a long-term, efficient, cost-effective, and climate-friendly supply. Caldoa was responsible for the planning and implementation of the entire technical control center, including the heat pump and control system.
Decarbonization of the Lichtenau Middle School Using an Ice Storage Solution
Caldoa installed an innovative ice storage system with a capacity of 531 m³ at the Lichtenau Secondary School. With a storage capacity of approximately 40,800 kWh and heating and cooling capacities of up to 225 kW and 214 kW, respectively, the school’s operations are supplied efficiently and sustainably.
Smart & Sustainable: Ice Storage Energy Solution for EDGE Friedrichspark Berlin
Caldoa supplied a high-performance, sustainable ice storage solution for the EDGE Friedrichspark Berlin smart office building. With a volume of 1,021 m³ and a storage capacity of approximately 78,491 kWh, the system is one of the largest of its kind in an inner-city setting. It achieves up to 900 kW of cooling capacity and 570 kW of heating capacity. The system was precisely tailored to meet the high requirements for energy efficiency, flexibility, and smart building concepts. Caldoa was responsible for the complete implementation of the technical control center, including heat pumps and intelligent control systems.
