Information

Sweco is your uncomplicated, committed partner with recognized expertise. We want to change society together with you and are already acting today for the world of tomorrow.

In August 2019, the long-established company Götzelmann + Partner GmbH joined Sweco GmbH.
As before, we deliver professional excellence in every project - whether small or large. Need to make 1,000 decisions? Thanks to our integrated expertise in a wide range of specialist areas, one is enough: the one for Sweco. We offer you sustainable solutions from a single source.

In the field of spatial and environmental planning, we want to support you in developing your region and making it fit for the future. This involves land management and pipeline construction, but also urban planning aspects - all in compliance with nature conservation requirements.

Another aspect that we deal with in order to enable a climate-friendly future: Water, energy and industry. This includes waste management concepts that enable recyclability, as well as new processes in water management and surveying. But the expansion of renewable energy sources is also part of our commitment to creating a flexible system.

Roads, cycle paths, railroad lines: in our everyday lives, we use a wide variety of transportation routes that we expect to get us to our destination as smoothly as possible. Sweco designs precisely these, with the aim of planning long-term engineering structures that enable long-term use. This includes traffic routes, but also water infrastructure issues such as flood protection or sewer renovations.

One of our core competencies is architecture and structural engineering. We develop solutions for complex tasks that can involve everything from structural design to operating technology. Our planning is based on technology, but comfort and sustainability are equally relevant aspects.

In the midst of digitalization, we at Sweco naturally also want to support you in this regard. Digital networking can make your project more transparent and the exchange of knowledge faster. Processes can also be automated and better regulated, which usually saves money and offers opportunities for lower-emission and climate-neutral solutions.

Elimination of trace substances at Friedrichshafen wastewater treatment plant

Friedrichshafen sewage treatment plant

Every day, chemicals and pharmaceuticals enter municipal wastewater treatment plants with domestic wastewater. The mechanical and biological treatment stages of a wastewater treatment plant have no significant retention capacity for a large number of these dissolved organic trace substances, meaning that they are still contained in the effluent. Due to the large number of trace substances found in wastewater and their low concentration of less than 1 µg/l, no direct impact on the watercourse and the flora and fauna living there can usually be determined, e.g. as part of an aquatic ecology study. However, long-term studies now clearly show that fish and other aquatic organisms are harmed by the often hormonally active trace substances.

For this reason, more and more sewage treatment plants are installing a so-called fourth purification stage. In the case of the Friedrichshafen wastewater treatment plant, which has a capacity of 87,500 population equivalents, trace substance elimination is carried out using ozone. Other processes for removing trace substances from wastewater include adsorbents such as granular or powdered activated carbon. Sweco GmbH also has a number of references for these processes; for example, the first discontinuous GAC filter in Germany was installed at the Immendingen-Geisingen wastewater treatment plant in 2020. The first large-scale PAC plant in Germany was built at the Kressbronn-Langenargen wastewater treatment plant in 2011 - as a full-flow plant due to its location in the Lake Constance catchment area.
