Rugged Recycling Equipment and Grinders for the Plastics Industry

Wash granulator for grinding post-consumer plastics with wear protection (rotor + housing)

Wash granulators are frequently used as the first washing stage in post-consumer recycling plants. There, they fulfill the requirements of both granulation and cleaning. The intense friction within the mill is utilized to meet both requirements in a single machine. For products that are particularly prone to wear, the mill is equipped with reinforced tools and wear-resistant linings. The SM series is particularly well-suited for this application and, with proper maintenance, can be operated for many years.

Products

SR Series Tube Mill

Tubular mill with horizontal feed and feeding device

SR Series granulators granulate thick, long pipes and profiles in a single stage.

The SR pipe grinder offers the option of noise-reduced operation, maximum safety, and high throughput thanks to an upstream feeding system.

Pipes up to 6 m long pose significant challenges for conventional-design cutting mills. They require pits or platforms to facilitate the feeding of long, bulky pipes.

A horizontally mounted feed trough with a load-dependent feed carriage conveys the material to the cutter. The enclosed design prevents material from being ejected during any cutting phase.

LM Cutting Mill with Double Oblique Cut

LM Cutting Mill with Double Oblique Cut

The LM cutting mill is equipped with “double-angle cutting geometry.” Inside the mill housing, both the rotor blades and the opposing stator blades are positioned at an angle to one another. The operating principle of this double-angled cut ensures a precise cutting gap across the entire working width. In addition to lower noise levels, this reduces the thermal stress on the feed material. Furthermore, the LM series cutting mills are extremely durable. The housing components, rotor shaft, blade supports, and bearings are designed with a high degree of redundancy.

The externally mounted rotor shaft is separated from the grinding chamber and housed in external plummer block bearings. This ensures effective isolation from the material being processed. As a result, dust particles cannot enter the bearing assembly from the grinding chamber. This extends the service life of the rotor bearings and prevents premature wear. It also prevents the internal grinding chamber from overheating due to the temperature of the bearings.

Applications of the Cutting Mills

The NEW HERBOLD LM series cutter mills are specifically designed for grinding bulky plastic waste with thin to medium wall thicknesses. These are robust and low-noise machines, designed for medium-duty applications.

Typical applications for this series of shredders include:

  • Shredding of films (e.g., in-line)
  • Shredding of canisters
  • Shredding of thin-walled pipes (PVC, PE, PP)
  • Shredding of profiles
  • Shredding of bumpers
  • Shredding of injection molding waste
  • Shredding of stamped grids
  • Shredding of deep-drawn parts

Advantages of the NEW HERBOLD Cutting Mills

Machine downtime is reduced to the time required to remove and install the blades. The time-consuming and laborious adjustment inside the grinder is no longer necessary. Blade changes can typically be performed using an impact wrench. The shredder has a low-profile design, with the housing split diagonally.

  • Compact design
  • Energy-efficient shredding
  • Low noise level due to double oblique cut
  • Easy cleaning when changing colors or materials
  • Minimal downtime during blade changes thanks to blade presetting

SM Cutting Mill

SM 800/200 Cutting Mill

The rotors of the NEUE HERBOLD SM-series cutting mills are equipped with double-angle-cut technology. Both the rotating blades and the stator blades in the mill housing are positioned at an angle to one another. This technology ensures a precise cutting gap across the entire width of the working surface and also guarantees an effective cut. At the same time, the noise level is significantly reduced.

The rotor shaft, which is externally mounted and separated from the grinding chamber, is housed in stand-alone bearings. This ensures reliable separation from the material being processed and prevents dust particles from escaping the grinding chamber. Thanks to the mill housing’s shatter-resistant welded steel construction, it withstands exceptional stresses during continuous operation. Optionally, the housing can also be lined with replaceable wear plates.

Alternatively, this model is also available in a wet version (wet cutting mill / washing mill).

Applications of the SM Cutting Mills

The wide range of applications for these cutting mills is particularly noteworthy. These mills can be equipped with various rotors. The rotor variants are suitable, among other things, for the following comminution tasks:

  • Shredding of solid lumps
  • Shredding of PA fibers
  • Shredding of rubber bales
  • Shredding of bulky parts
  • Shredding of thick-walled sheets
  • Shredding of start-up lumps
  • Shredding of film bundles
  • Shredding of solid profiles
  • Shredding of hollow objects
  • Shredding of beverage crates and vegetable crates

This type of grinder meets the diverse requirements of a modern recycling facility.

Advantages of the SM Series

  • Energy-efficient shredding
  • Maximum throughput
  • Low noise level due to double oblique cut
  • versatile applications
  • Compact design
  • Minimal downtime during blade changes thanks to blade presetting

ZM Fine Grinders

Fine grinder for grinding plastic to a size of less than 1 mm

NEUE HERBOLD 's fine mills / impact disc mills are high-performance fine grinders. They can be equipped with a temperature control system.

The material to be pulverized is fed between two grinding discs. Centrifugal force propels the material between a stationary grinding disc and a grinding disc rotating at high speed. The granules are then finely ground and pneumatically extracted from the grinding chamber. Our fine grinders and impact disc mills operate without a screen.

The low cross-section of the grinding chamber and the flat, nearly vertical arrangement of the grinding discs are further advantages of these mills.

The use of state-of-the-art bearing technology with special bearings ensures correspondingly high rotational speeds. This eliminates the need for two drive motors. This technology reduces both mechanical and control-related complexity.

Low drive power combined with high throughput rates is ensured by the high peripheral speeds and a highly effective impact-crushing action.

The particle size of the fine product is primarily determined by the design of the grinding discs and the gap between the grinding tools. Depending on the application, a screening machine with recirculation of the oversize material can be easily integrated downstream.

Applications of the NEUE HERBOLD Fine Mills

ZM 500 with soundproof enclosure

NEUE HERBOLD ’s fine mills, also known as impact disc mills, are specifically designed for the fine grinding and pulverization of brittle, impact-resistant, or medium-hard materials, granules, and plastics.

The feed material to be pulverized is in granular form. Depending on the machine size, the granules to be pulverized may have a maximum particle size of 6–8 mm.

A typical application is the

  • fine grinding of PE granules
  • Fine grinding of PVC granules
  • Fine grinding of PC
  • Fine grinding of other plastics

Advantages of NEUE HERBOLD Fine Grinders

  • High throughput
  • Low thermal stress on the material being ground
