BioDevCenter @ NMI Naturwissenschaftliches und Medizinisches Institut

Information

The BioDevCenter research group at the NMI in Reutlingen possesses extensive expertise in the analysis, characterization, and development of enzymes, proteins, and biopharmaceutical active ingredients. Its focus is on the development and application of modern bioanalytical methods such as mass spectrometry (LC-MS, LC-MS/MS – Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC – Size Exclusion Chromatography), and biophysical analytics (e.g., DLS, nanoDSF – Differential Scanning Fluorimetry). With this portfolio of methods, we offer precise protein and enzyme analysis to determine structure, stability, modifications, and activity —from basic research to industry-oriented projects.

We place a special focus on enzyme development for complex industrial applications, such as waste recycling. For example, we achieved a breakthrough in the enzymatic recycling of cellulose from diapers. Through targeted biochemical analysis and enzyme screening, we were able to identify and combine enzymes that enable the selective degradation of cellulose from this material.

In addition, we develop innovative solutions for alternative proteins, novel foods, and precision fermentation. Our expertise includes the characterization of food proteins in terms of solubility, emulsion stability, protein digestibility, and oxidation stability, as well as the development of analytical assays for quality control. We support our partners in establishing and optimizing enzymatic processes in food technology.

The NMI – Institute for Natural Sciences and Medicine in Reutlingen is an application-oriented research institute at the intersection of medicine, natural sciences, and engineering. We combine academic research with industrial applications —particularly in the fields of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical technology.
